Burkina Faso: A new outbreak of avian flu discovered and extinguished in Ouagadougou

Ouagadougou, March 6, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Minister of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Commander Ismaël Sombié, announced on Wednesday in a statement the appearance of a new outbreak of avian flu that was promptly extinguished in Ouagadougou.

In a press release, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Commander Ismaël Sombié, informed through a statement dated March 6, 2024, the appearance of new cases of avian flu on March 1 in Ouagadougou.

However, the note specifies that as of January 23, 2023, all outbreaks were completely extinguished and infection declarations were lifted in the regions.

While Burkina Faso has begun the process of self-declaration as a disease-free country, as stated in the press release, a new outbreak appeared on March 1, 2024 in sector 23 of district 5 of the municipality of Ouagadougou, Kadiogo province, in the center region.

The reaction of the veterinarians allowed the implementation of appropriate response measures that led to the extinguishing of the outbreak.

The Minister, however, calls on breeders to exercise maximum vigilance, considering the severity of the disease.

He also assures that appropriate measures have been taken for the surveillance of the said outbreak in order to contain any resurgence of the disease and prevent the appearance of any potential new outbreaks.

He also invites stakeholders in the poultry industry and the entire population to report promptly any observation of massive mortality of domestic and wild birds to the relevant authorities.

It is worth noting that an outbreak of avian flu had caused the mortality of 681,450 poultry in 12 regions of the country in 2022.
