Burkina/Covid 19: Government aims to learn from response plan

Ouagadougou, March 29, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – As part of the global coalition to assess the impact of Covid-19, the national evaluation commission organized a workshop last Friday to evaluate the national plan to combat the Covid-19 pandemic in order to draw lessons to face future crises.

“The interest of this evaluation is to draw all the lessons in terms of effectiveness, proposals that have been made, but also in terms of methods used that could ensure, for future crises, better management,” said the first vice-president of the national evaluation commission, Larba Issa Kobyagda, during the launch ceremony of the evaluation of the national plan to fight against Covid-19 in Ouagadougou.

Mr. Kobyagda emphasized that this evaluation is independent and is carried out by the national study office Nazan, which is tasked with analyzing the relevance, coherence, effectiveness, efficiency, and viability of all measures taken by the government to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This office should be able to engage with all stakeholders, including the executive secretariat and the 5 sub-commissions that worked during the implementation of the response plan against Covid-19, as well as the populations that experienced this crisis,” he added.

Larba Issa Kobyagda also indicated that this evaluation is part of the global coalition to assess the impact of Covid-19.

According to the World Bank’s global initial assessment representative within the coalition, Miché Ouédraogo, this global coalition aims to support countries in evaluating and drawing lessons from the measures put in place in order to take more effective measures for future crises.

“By launching the global evaluation initiative, the World Bank aims to support countries in strengthening their evaluation capacities and to support governments in having evidence-based data for decision-making in the management and implementation of public policies,” he added.

Larba Issa Kobyagda emphasized that based on what will be considered as limitations at the end of the evaluation, it will be up to the government to take measures to ensure a more effective response system to future crises.

According to Mr. Kobyagda, Burkina Faso recorded 22,453 cases of Covid-19 with 396 deaths between March 9, 2020, and April 30, 2023.
