Burkina/CIL: Five days of reflections for the protection of personal data

Ouagadougou, March 26, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Commission on Information and Freedoms (CIL) began on Tuesday reflections for a culture of the protection of personal data, with experts and students for five days.

“To establish within the populations a culture of the protection of personal data, the Commission on Information and Freedoms (CIL) obtained from the government the institutionalization of March 30 of each year as the National Day of Protection of personal data (JNPDP),” said Dr Halguièta Nassa/Trawina.

According to Ms. Nassa, who is also the president of CIL, the institution has initiated exchanges and reflections with experts, researchers, and students for a culture of personal data protection in Burkina Faso.

The president of CIL spoke on Tuesday in Ouagadougou during a launch ceremony commemorating the second JNPDP under the theme “Protection of personal data in a context of security crisis: Stakes and perspectives.”

For the 2024 edition, CIL is organizing a series of activities aimed at promoting the right to personal data protection, as she explained that there is no doubt the current context is marked by massive collection of personal data by digital giants.

“This situation has become even more complex in view of the difficult security situation our countries are facing,” she said. Dr Halguièta Nassa/Trawina emphasized the need to raise awareness about the protection of personal data in the country, hence the conduct of a public conference for students, leading up to JNPDP on March 30, 2024.

She stated that her institution wants every Burkinabe to be a stakeholder in peace and to ensure public security in a particular context of fighting terrorism.

The vice-president of the national organizing committee of the 2nd edition of JNPDP, Hamidou Bandé, noted that their institution aims to popularize personal data protection while playing their part in the fight for peace in Burkina Faso.

Mr. Bandé, who is also the secretary general of CIL, stated that this 2nd edition remains an opportunity for Burkinabe to discuss best practices in personal data protection. He also pointed out that the discussions will allow for a debate on good citizen behavior in a context of security crisis.

For Dr. Ousmane Bougouma, president of the Legislative Assembly of Transition (ALT) and host of the ceremony, many Burkinabe citizens use personal data in the digital age, in the field of information technology and social networks (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram).

Dr. Bougouma mentioned that CIL is the body responsible for managing personal data issues in Burkina Faso. Established in 2021, JNPDP aims to take stock of activities regarding the protection of personal data and to project into the future.
