Burkina: Christians, Muslims, and Traditionalists Gather for a Collective Meal to Break Their Fast
In Ouagadougou, on March 22, 2024, young people organized a collective breaking of the fast for all Burkinabe at the Palace of Culture Jean Pierre Guinganné, without distinction of religion. An opportunity to strengthen social cohesion and unity among all layers of society.
According to Moumouni Koudougou, the president of the organizing committee for this collective breaking of the fast, it is the realization of a dream to see Burkinabe brothers and sisters live as siblings and not as Christians on one side and Muslims on the other.
“God arranged for the Muslim fast to coincide with the Christian fast, and we seized this opportunity to make it a launching pad for social cohesion, living together in peace, and living together in a peaceful and brotherly manner,” he added.
On this occasion, traditional authorities were also invited.
The representative of the traditional chiefs delegation, Rassam Naaba de Cissin, mentioned that it is not a coincidence that God made the two Muslim and Christian fasts fall at the same time.
“It is a sign from Him to show us that we are similar,” he emphasized.
Emmanuel Kafando, representing the Evangelical Church, stated that before being evangelical Protestants, pastors, or Muslims, we are all Burkinabe and we must work to preserve this bond.
“It is God, the omnipotent, the omniscient, who wanted all these differences so that each one can learn from the other and improve continuously and perpetually,” said Imam Lassané Sakandé.
In a festive atmosphere, the Burkinabe communed around a rich menu composed, among other things, of traditional millet porridge, degue, not to mention pastries and natural juices.
All these dishes are part of the contributions from different entities to this initiative aimed at reminding everyone that beyond our religions, we are brothers and sisters of the same nation.
Mrs. Koudougou/Badini Salamatou, responsible for Manegré Communication and Services, decided to support this noble initiative by providing porridge, kinkeliba coffee, natural juices, and pastries.
According to the president of the organizing committee, this breaking of the fast was attended by more than 500 people from all neighborhoods of Ouagadougou and even from other cities in the country, including Manga, Ziniaré, and Koudougou.
“This enthusiasm reassures us in our position because it proves that people aspire to living together, social cohesion, and the search for brotherhood,” emphasized Moumouni Koudougou.
“If such initiatives multiply, we believe that we can meet the challenge of insecurity that currently tarnishes the peace of the country,” stated the 3rd vice-president of the special delegation of the municipality of Ouagadougou, Kiemtore/Ouédraogo Mamounata.
Dr. Abdallah Ouédraogo, one of the participants, expressed his wish that this commendable initiative spreads throughout the country in order to truly achieve its goal of social cohesion.
