Burkina Faso: Celebration of March 8 and Ministerial Councils Make Headlines in the Dailies
Ouagadougou, March 7, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The newspapers in their publications on Thursday echo important decisions taken during the Council of Ministers on Wednesday and the celebration of International Women’s Rights Day.
“Council of Ministers: May 15th Established as the Day of Customs and Traditions in Burkina Faso” headlines the public daily Sidwaya.
“Under the Ministry of Territorial Administration, Decentralization and Security, the council adopted a decree establishing the day of customs and traditions in Burkina Faso. According to the minister in charge of territorial administration Emile Zerbo, in the context of valorizing our customs and traditions, the Head of State instructed his ministry and the resource persons, who are the traditional chiefs, to institute this day,” writes Sidwaya.
According to the Minister of Territorial Administration, Decentralization and Security Emile Zerbo, “this decree aims to strengthen the secularism of the State and allow traditional religion to regain its place in society. May 15th is now declared a holiday,” Emile Zerbo emphasized.
For its part, the newspaper Le Pays reports that the Council of Ministers adopted a decree establishing a company called “Marcena Gold Refinery in Burkina Faso for the development of trade and handicrafts, small and medium-sized enterprises.”
L’Observateur Paalga reports that the Council also adopted a decree establishing “conditions for the exercise of book operator activities in Burkina Faso, aimed at optimizing the contribution of the book industry to the national economy through the improvement of the legal framework.”
In another topic, the daily Sidwaya mentions March 8th with an interview with the Minister in charge of gender, Nandy Somé.
Under the theme “Promotion of women’s community entrepreneurship: what contribution from women?” this day will be followed by several activities, such as holding provincial consultation frameworks and organizing a training session for women from the 13 regions on the processing of local products.
Nady Somé, the Minister in charge of solidarity, urges women to remember all the women who have lost a loved one and asks women to avoid excesses and festive gatherings because March 8th always takes place in a particularly difficult context.
The newspaper Le Pays addresses the same topic with statements from the Burkinabe population.
“I wish for a significant improvement in the status of Burkinabe women, especially women in rural areas, because everything starts from there,” said Caren Kafando, Miss University 2023.
“On the occasion of the international celebration of women, I call on all women to be aware of their role in society because no matter what situation women are in today, they are the pillar, the driving force, the catalyst for their personal development and the development of their environment,” according to Hadéja Keita, vice-president of the Burkinabe Association for the Emergence of the Cultural Economy.
Other news topics also interested Burkinabe dailies. Le Pays features in its headlines and in its Revelation section, “Diapaga: five people killed in a plane crash,” while on the same subject, L’Observateur’s headline reads, “Diapaga: 5 dead and 2 injured in an aircraft crash.”
