Burkina Faso Celebrates International Day of Monuments and Sites with Flag-Raising at National Museum

Ouagadougou, April 18, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Minister of State, Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, raised the Burkinabe flag at the National Museum in Ouagadougou on Thursday as part of the celebration of the International Day of Monuments and Sites (IDMS).

Established in 1982 by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), on the proposal of UNESCO, the celebration of this day is intended to be a strong act in the fight against disasters of all kinds that pose serious threats to major cultural landmarks of our civilization. Under the theme “Disasters and Conflicts through the Lens of the Venice Charter,” the celebration of the International Day of Monuments and Sites also marks the opening of the celebration of Burkinabe Heritage Month.

In acknowledging all those who have contributed to the creation of monuments in Burkina Faso and all the managers of the country’s memorial sites, Minister of State, Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, expressed his hope that the national ICOMOS committee will further engage in the animation of Burkinabe Heritage Month and support the efforts of public and private entities during various visiting programs.

According to the President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Mr. Nangao Bély Hermann Abdoul Karim, the objective of Heritage Month is to mobilize as many compatriots as possible around monuments and sites in our country and for ICOMOS. This is a beneficial measure in the field of immovable cultural heritage protection, which is their area of intervention.

On the sidelines of the day, the minister presented a set of equipment to the National Museum, which included a computer, a sound system kit, dictaphones, and a camera, among other items.
