Burkina: an association offers over 3 million FCFA worth of food to 25 fallen combatant families

Ouagadougou, March 30, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Resilient People – Sahel Association for Social Cohesion and Development (APR-Sahel) offered more than 3 million worth of food to 25 families of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) and the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) who fell in the line of duty in the fight against terrorism in Burkina Faso on Saturday.

“The donation this morning reflects a spirit of solidarity which is the main objective of our association,” said the president of the Resilient People – Sahel Association for Social Cohesion and Development (APR-Sahel), Thomas Hien.

For him, the gesture of his association, consisting of bags of rice, corn, and oil cans, valued at 3.5 million FCFA, aims to support 25 families of the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) and the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) fallen in combat.

Mr. Hien spoke on Saturday at the VDP Brigade headquarters in Ouaga 2000 during a food distribution ceremony.

The president of APR-Sahel explained that his association will support the widows of fallen combatant forces with Income Generating Activities (IGA) for their social reintegration.

“APR-Sahel commits to providing this kind of donation to the families of fallen VDP/FDS on a quarterly basis,” he stated.

Thomas Hien also emphasized that the association aims to educate the orphans of VDP/FDS and support them psychologically and medically.

According to him, APR-Sahel plans to establish educational centers to allow the orphans to live decently within society.

The representative of the Transitional President, the Special Advisor to the President of Burkina Faso, Samuel Kankoumdo, praised the action taken for the families of fallen VDP/FDS combatants.

According to Mr. Kankoumdo, the path outlined by APR-Sahel is the right one because, despite the government’s efforts to help the orphans of VDP and FDS, many challenges still need to be addressed.

He also urged other associations to follow suit in taking care of the families of the combatant forces engaged in reclaiming national territory.

The ceremony’s sponsor, the commander of the VDP Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Sawadogo, also thanked the association for its support to the families of fallen VDP and FDS combatants.

Mr. Sawadogo hoped that APR-Sahel’s initiative would inspire others to help the rightful heirs of the brave soldiers who fell on the battlefield.

“The government is making efforts, but it is never enough. Today, the association’s contribution comes at the right time to bring a smile to the families of VDP and FDS who died on the front lines,” he added.

The spokesperson for the beneficiaries, Clémentine Koara, expressed gratitude to the association for its act of solidarity towards the families of the nation’s heroes.

She prayed for the ancestors’ blessings for peace to return to Burkina Faso.

Established on March 5, 2024, APR-Sahel aims to support an average of 100 VDP and FDS families to live decently with a minimum livelihood. Agency d’information du Burkina NO/ata
