Pugilist Keddy Agnes and swimmer Felicity Passon were crowned the best male and female athletes for the year 2023 at a ceremony held at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort & Casino. This was the second time both athletes received this prestigious honor, with Agnes previously winning in 2018 and Passon in 2019.

The crowning ceremony took place in the presence of President Wavel Ramkalawan, Cabinet Ministers, high-ranking government officials, families, and friends. Both athletes were recognized for their outstanding performances in their respective sports throughout the year.

Keddy Agnes, a heavyweight boxer, had a successful year competing at continental levels and major competitions. He participated in the AFBC Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships in Cameroon, where he won a silver medal. He also competed at the 2024 Olympics African Qualification Tournament in Senegal, bringing home a bronze medal.

Judoka Nantenaina Finesse, who won a gold medal at the 2023 Commonwealth Judo Championships, was named the runner-up. Swimmer Simon Bachmann, who won a total of 10 medals at the 11th Indian Ocean Islands Games in Madagascar, was recognized as the third-place finisher.

Veteran judoka Dominic Dugasse, who won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Judo Championships, was named the fourth-place finisher. Karateka Richard Ah-Weng, who finished fourth at the 1st World Kyokushin Ryu Karate Tournament, was recognized as the fifth-place finisher.

Felicity Passon, a swimmer who retained her title from 2019, had a successful year at the Indian Ocean Islands Games in Madagascar, winning a gold medal and several silver and bronze medals. Volleyballer Angelique Adeline, who won a gold medal at the IOIG, was named the runner-up. Maya Biong, the captain of the women’s national volleyball team, finished third after leading her team to a gold medal at the IOIG.

Karateka Mastura Shah-Faure, who won two medals at the World Tang Soo Do Association Region 14 Championship, was named the fourth-place finisher. Athlete Natasha Chetty, based in the United States, finished in fifth place after a successful year in high jump and sprint events before sustaining an injury.

Overall, these athletes demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in their respective sports throughout the year 2023, earning them recognition and accolades at the crowning ceremony. Their achievements serve as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and represent the best of Seychellois sportsmanship.
