The Okavango Wilderness Safaris Local Supplies Expo is a long-awaited event that seeks to promote citizen participation in the tourism industry. The expo, held in Maun, Botswana, aims to create opportunities for local businesses by positioning them as potential suppliers of various products to the Wilderness camps. With a focus on fresh produce, curios, beverages, clothing, and more, the expo brings together exhibitors from across the country for future collaboration and partnerships.

Joe Matome, the Caretaker MD of OWS, expressed excitement over the participation of over 110 local vendors who met the criteria set out for the expo. While not all applicants were selected for the event, there are plans for workshops to help eligible suppliers align with expectations and quality standards. In 2023, OWS purchased P1.3 billion worth of goods from local suppliers, accounting for 85% of all purchases, with a goal to increase this percentage over time.

The expo goes beyond a one-day event, with a long-term commitment to inspiring a movement towards more citizen involvement in the procurement side of the tourism industry. Kabelo Ebineng, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Entrepreneurship, emphasized the importance of supporting local producers and suppliers for economic growth and community resilience. By nurturing efficient and resilient value chains, Botswana can stimulate economic activity while preserving its cultural heritage and environment.

Partners like Stanbic Bank, NDB, LEA, and CEDA were present at the expo to offer support to exhibitors in overcoming funding challenges and accessing new markets. Kushatha Chilisa of Stanbic Bank highlighted the barriers entrepreneurs face, such as funding, capacity, and market access, and emphasized the bank’s commitment to partnering for growth through its Accelerate Incubator program.

Kabelo Binns, Chairman of the OWS Board, shared the long process leading up to the expo and expressed optimism for its continued growth and impact in the future. With contracts worth up to P1 million being confirmed, Wilderness Safaris is dedicated to enhancing its local procurement efforts and supporting majority citizen-owned businesses that contribute to the economy.

As the expo evolves and expands, it aims to empower local businesses to thrive and serve markets beyond Botswana and Wilderness camps. By fostering collaboration, training, and mentorship, the expo sets the stage for a more inclusive and sustainable tourism industry in Botswana. With a focus on quality standards, cultural heritage preservation, and economic growth, the Okavango Wilderness Safaris Local Supplies Expo is paving the way for a brighter future for local businesses and the tourism sector in Botswana.
