Botswana’s dart players recently came together in both Francistown and Gaborone for the preliminary selection process to determine the national representation for the upcoming Region V Games in Eswatini. This selection process was vital in forming a strong team that could defend the title won in Namibia in 2022. With venues like the Francistown Centre for Illegal Immigrants (FCII) and Camp Primary School in Gaborone hosting a total of 112 hopefuls across various categories, the competition was fierce.
The selection process included the Under 25 Division, the Senior Team, and the Veterans category for players over 50 years old. A total of three men and three women secured spots in the Under 25 Division, while six women and eight men earned positions in the Senior Team. Additionally, three veterans in each gender also emerged victorious, showcasing the depth of talent within Botswana’s darts community.
While the selection process was successful in forming a competitive team, challenges still lie ahead for Team Botswana. Thato Maphorisa, the spokesperson for the Botswana Darts Association (BODA), highlighted the main challenge of securing funds for holding camps and transporting the team to Eswatini. Despite these obstacles, Maphorisa remained optimistic about securing the necessary funds in due time, emphasizing the determination and commitment of Botswana’s darts community to excel on the regional stage.
The selection process took place just three weeks after BODA’s annual general meeting in Gaborone, where new members were elected to the executive committee. George Lekang emerged as the vice president, filling a position left vacant due to work commitments, while Tiro Mokgoare took on the role of Recording Secretary, injecting new energy into an executive committee entering its final year in office. With elections on the horizon, the National Executive Committee (NEC) is expected to undergo some transformation, paving the way for renewed leadership within BODA.
The journey towards defending their title and representing Botswana at the Region V Games in Eswatini is filled with challenges, but the determination and passion of Botswana’s darts community are unwavering. As the team prepares to take on competitors from across the region, the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship shines through, showcasing the dedication and talent within the Botswana darts community.
