Donald Molosi, the multi-talented artist, recently announced his resignation as president of the Upright African Movement. This news comes after his seven years of dedicated service to the movement, during which he worked tirelessly to decolonize the modern African in innovative ways. As his final assignment, he has committed to translating and publishing the “Dear Upright African” book into Setswana, with a completion date set for May of this year.

The Upright African Movement, which Molosi started in 2017, aims to challenge the limitations of the African classroom and facilitate educational reform. In the same year, Molosi authored and published the movement’s manifesto, which was received in book form by The Mantle Book in New York.

Reflecting on his time with the movement, Molosi expressed his gratitude to the people of Botswana for embracing his education activism and thanked Tsitsi Dangarembga, who served as his mentor throughout his presidency and wrote the foreword for their manifesto. The book, “Dear Upright African,” received an African Authors Award in the Best Story category in 2018 and was launched in East Africa, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia. Additionally, Molosi presented the manifesto alongside Tsitsi Dangarembga at the African Book Festival of Berlin in Germany.

Molosi’s resignation is a deliberate move to create space for a younger generation of activists to utilize the established platform of the Upright African Movement. He expressed his desire to step back and assume an advisory role as a board member while the new generation continues the fight for educational reform.

One of Molosi’s key initiatives during his tenure was to shed light on the absence of African history in the curriculum, which led to the creation of a radio show on Gabz FM aimed at engaging a larger youth audience. He emphasized that globalizing the movement was a priority during his presidency and expressed his confidence in the incoming president, a social entrepreneur based in Zimbabwe and Botswana, who shares Molosi’s passion for decolonization.

The incoming president will oversee the execution of the movement’s mandate in Kenya, Botswana, and Tanzania, acting as the liaison between these offices and reporting to the international board. It is widely anticipated that the new president’s focus will encompass facilitating trade and business between African economies as a means of decolonization.

As the Upright African Movement transitions to new leadership, they plan to announce a diverse board later in the year and reintroduce themselves to their well-wishers. The intention is to make educational reform a focal point in the minds of voters during the upcoming election year.

Reflecting on Molosi’s leadership, one volunteer of the movement, Clive Ganess, remarked on the movement’s growth under Molosi’s direction, even expanding to Trinidad. The impact of Molosi’s leadership has energized a generation of Black and Brown youth, and well-wishers are optimistic about the movement’s future.

In conclusion, Donald Molosi’s decision to step down as president marks a new chapter for the Upright African Movement. His dedication and vision have paved the way for a new generation to carry the torch forward and continue the fight for educational reform and decolonization on the African continent. With the incoming president set to assume leadership in March, there is an air of optimism among well-wishers and volunteers, as the movement prepares to embark on its next phase.
