The Kingdom of eSwatini has responded to accusations made by President Mokgweetsi Masisi that King Mswati is harboring former president Ian Khama to evade justice in Botswana. President Masisi alleged that both the Republic of South Africa and eSwatini were accommodating Khama despite his fugitive status, which he claimed was detrimental to diplomatic relations between countries.

In a statement to the eSwatini media, government spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo stated that the government was unaware of Khama being a fugitive and therefore had no basis to respond to the allegations. Nxumalo emphasized that any communication between King Mswati and President Masisi would be handled through the established framework of mutual diplomatic relations managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Meanwhile, King Mswati’s Director of Communications, Percy Simelane, criticized President Masisi for ignoring international protocols and engaging in mudslinging. Simelane clarified that Khama does not reside in eSwatini but visits from South Africa where he and his family live. He urged President Masisi to adhere to UN and SADC protocols for resolving disputes between countries rather than making unfounded accusations.

Reports suggest that Khama may have relocated to eSwatini after losing VIP protection in South Africa, with some sources claiming he has been appointed as a Special Personal Advisor to King Mswati. While the eSwatini government has denied these claims, local media outlets have reported that Khama receives accommodation and state security personnel from the King.

Allegations indicate that Khama is currently staying in a hotel with potential housing arrangements in a property owned by King Mswati’s wife. He is said to be accompanied by security officers from Botswana and a team of soldiers and police officers. Sources also suggest that Khama may consider purchasing a residence in eSwatini in the future.

The dispute between Botswana and eSwatini regarding the presence of Ian Khama in the country has sparked controversy and highlighted the importance of adhering to diplomatic protocols in resolving international issues. As tensions escalate, it remains to be seen how the two countries will address the situation and maintain their diplomatic relations moving forward.
