The highly anticipated first episode of Season 4 of the popular South African crime drama series, “Blood & Water,” is now streaming on Netflix. The episode features music from house DJ TNS, Musida, and local artist Han C. The opening scene of the latest season, which premiered on March 1, 2024, showcases the artist’s new song titled “Piece of You,” from TNS’ recently released project, “King of African House EP.”
Han C expressed his excitement about being a featured artist on TNS’ album last year and having his song selected for use in the series. He shared that it was a cool experience to hear his voice on international platforms and hoped that more of his music would be used in the future. The track featured on TNS’ EP is a love song where a man is pursuing his interest in a woman.
In terms of compensation for his feature, Han C mentioned that there are percentages and royalty splits involved, although he couldn’t disclose specific details. “Blood & Water” premiered in 2020 and has already garnered three successful seasons, with the fourth season currently airing. The crime drama follows the story of two sisters separated at birth, with one sister being abducted by a human trafficking ring as a child. The other sister, Puleng (played by Ama Qamata), transfers to an elite Cape Town boarding school in search of her long-lost sibling.
As Puleng investigates her sister’s whereabouts, she uncovers a web of secrets kept by her friends and family over the years. In the third season, Fikile (played by Khosi Ngema) must take desperate measures to help track down Puleng when she is kidnapped once again. Local songbird Mpho Sebina also made her Netflix debut in the first season of “Blood & Water” with her song “Loves Light” and returned in the second season with her hit track “Dumelang.”
The inclusion of local artists’ music in popular series like “Blood & Water” not only showcases their talent but also provides them with exposure to international audiences. The collaboration between TNS, Musida, Han C, and other artists reflects the diversity of African music and highlights the rich cultural landscape of the continent. Through platforms like Netflix, African musicians can reach a global audience and share their unique sounds with viewers worldwide.
