The Botswana Netball Association (BONA) has decided not to send a team to the Netball World Youth Cup Africa Region Qualifiers due to financial constraints. This unfortunate development has left players and officials disappointed, as Botswana will not be able to showcase their talent at the competition scheduled to take place in Pretoria, South Africa from 17 to 24 March 2024.

BONA had selected a provisional squad of 21 players for the competition from a pool of 71 athletes who participated in an U-21 National Team Selection Tournament held on 17 February at BONA Courts in Gaborone. The selection process was described as rigorous, highlighting the commitment and potential of Botswana’s youth in netball. However, the last-minute withdrawal has dashed the hopes of the players who were eager to compete.

Mokeresete Mokeresete, a spokesperson for BONA, expressed regret over the situation, stating that the association’s funds have been depleted, making it impossible to send the team to South Africa. This financial challenge reflects the broader struggle faced by sports organizations in Botswana to secure funding for international competitions. The absence of Botswana’s team from the qualifiers not only impacts the players but also tarnishes the nation’s reputation on the international stage.

The missed opportunity to compete at the Netball World Youth Cup Africa Region Qualifiers deprives young athletes of invaluable experience and the chance to test their skills against top players from Africa and around the world. The setback is not just a loss in terms of potential accolades but also in the growth and development opportunities that come with international competition.

Despite the disappointment, BONA is focusing on domestic competitions, with the Lucara National Netball League currently on a break for the second transfer window and registration of new players. The league will resume in early April, running until 17 May 2024, providing a platform for local talent to continue honing their skills.

In conclusion, the withdrawal of Botswana’s team from the Netball World Youth Cup Africa Region Qualifiers due to financial constraints is a missed opportunity that has repercussions for the players, BONA, and the nation as a whole. The situation highlights the challenges faced by sports organizations in securing funding for international competitions and underscores the importance of support for developing young athletes in Botswana’s netball scene.
