Miss World Botswana, Lesego Chombo, has recently achieved a remarkable feat by securing a Top Four position in the Miss World Top Model competition. This historic achievement has garnered attention not only for Chombo but also for Botswana as a country known for its beauty queens and dedication to the global diamond market.
The highlight of Chombo’s journey to the Miss World finale on March 9, 2024, in Mumbai, India, is the diamond neckpiece she will be wearing. Named “Ak-Ba-Ka,” this exquisite piece is valued at 4.6 million Euros and features diamonds mined in Botswana by Lucara Botswana. The neckpiece, part of the Messika High Jewellery collection of 2022, has been worn by celebrities like Irina Shayk and Naomi Campbell at prestigious events.
The intricate details of the neckpiece include a 33.1 carat D color flawless cushion cut diamond surrounded by 2,550 diamonds totaling nearly 71.5 carats. The design incorporates various cuts, such as shield, modified pear, half moon, triangle, brilliant, and baguette, and took over 1,000 hours over a six-month period to create. Its shape resembles a winged scarab, enhancing Chombo’s flawless beauty and highlighting Botswana’s position in the global diamond market.
The significance of this momentous achievement extends beyond the beauty industry. Benjamin Raletsatsi, the Managing Director of Development Advance Institute and license holder of Miss Botswana, emphasizes the wealth and opportunity that the beauty industry can offer to Botswana and its people. Chombo’s success not only rewrites history but also serves as a testament to the transformative power of beauty and talent in shaping opportunities for individuals and countries.
In addition to her Top Four position in the Miss World Top Model competition, Chombo has also won the Top Model Africa title and showcased her talent in the talent finals. She is among the Top 14 performers who participated in the Miss World Gala and Talent Competition, further solidifying Botswana’s presence on the global beauty stage.
This achievement reflects Botswana’s journey from being one of the poorest countries at independence in 1966 to a middle-income economy today, thanks to its thriving diamond industry and prudent economic management. Lucara Botswana’s commitment to showcasing Botswana in the global diamond market through collaborations like the Ak-Ba-Ka neckpiece highlights the nation’s progress and potential in the luxury market.
As Chombo prepares to represent Botswana on the Miss World stage, her journey symbolizes resilience, beauty, and the transformative power of opportunities in shaping individual and national narratives. With the support of the beauty industry, Botswana continues to shine on the global stage, celebrating its beauty queens and economic achievements.
