The 18th Botswana National Swimming Championships are just around the corner, and the anticipation is building as Botswana’s swimming elite, along with international contenders, prepare for the prestigious event. Scheduled to take place from 22 to 25 February 2024 at the University of Botswana Pool in Gaborone, the championships are expected to draw a 26-strong Zimbabwean contingent, adding an international flair to the competition.

This year’s championships have taken on even greater significance as they have been accredited as an Olympic qualifier, offering participants the opportunity to secure coveted berths at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. Among the contenders are three Botswana elite swimmers currently based and schooling in America, who are making the trans-continental journey to test their mettle against local talents. Their presence underscores the international appeal of the event as swimmers from diverse backgrounds converge on Gaborone to chase their Olympic dreams.

Gwendolen Harry, an additional member of the Botswana Swimming Sports Association (BSSA) executive committee, expressed her excitement about the championships being granted Olympic qualifier status. In a telephone interview, she stated, “It’s a testament to the growing stature of our sport and the opportunities it presents for athletes on a global stage.” The championships will also be overseen by two referees from Eswatini, ensuring fair play and adherence to regulations throughout the competition.

The championships have received vital funding from the Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC), a long-standing supporter of the event. Additionally, this year the BSSA has established partnerships with DTCB and NDB, showcasing the growing interest and support from the corporate sector for the sport of swimming.

With 10 clubs vying for supremacy, the championships promise to be an exciting and highly competitive event, with athletes from Botswana, Zimbabwe, and other countries coming together to showcase their talents. The support from both the BNSC and the corporate sector reflects the growing recognition of swimming as a sport with great potential and a bright future in Botswana.

As the swimming community eagerly anticipates the 18th Botswana National Swimming Championships, the event is set to be a platform for athletes to demonstrate their skill and determination, and for the sport of swimming to continue its upward trajectory on both the national and international stage. With the stakes higher than ever as an Olympic qualifier, the championships are poised to be a showcase of talent, dedication, and the unifying power of sport.
