The Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) has expressed satisfaction with the country’s performance at the recently concluded African Games in Accra, Ghana. Despite fielding a smaller delegation this year, Botswana managed to secure a total of 13 medals, including three silvers and 10 bronzes. This achievement is commendable considering the team consisted of only 60 athletes across various disciplines such as athletics, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, chess, judo, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, karate, and weightlifting.
Athletics emerged as the standout performer, clinching six medals – three silvers and three bronzes. Other sports such as karate, swimming, taekwondo, and boxing also contributed to the medal tally with each securing bronze medals. Despite not winning any gold medals, the BNSC exceeded their target of 10 medals, showing the nation’s competitive spirit on the continental stage.
Peaceful Seleka, the Director of Sports Development at BNSC, highlighted some of the positive outcomes of the Games, including Botswana’s first team sports medal in beach volleyball, a bronze medal in the women’s 4×400 relay, and a silver medal in the 400m hurdles. Additionally, the mixed relay team set a national record and is currently ranked 12th in the world.
In comparison to the previous African Games in Rabat, Morocco in 2019 where Botswana won a total of 14 medals, including five golds, three silvers, and six bronzes, this year’s delegation was smaller. However, the performance of the athletes showcased the nation’s competitive spirit and determination on the continental stage.
The African Games, organized by the African Union in collaboration with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa and the Association of African Sports Confederations, are held every four years. This year’s theme, “Experience the African Dream,” emphasized the importance of showcasing athletic talent and promoting youth education across the continent. With over 4,000 athletes competing in 29 sports disciplines, the Games provided a platform for talent display and fierce competition.
The BNSC’s satisfaction with the performance at the African Games reflects the dedication and hard work of Botswana’s athletes and their commitment to representing their country on the international stage. Despite the challenges posed by a smaller delegation, the achievements of the team demonstrate the potential and talent within Botswana’s sporting community. As the nation continues to support and develop its athletes, the future looks bright for Botswana’s presence in the world of sports.
