The Phoenix Assurance Botswana Open Championship 2024, hosted by the Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA) in Gaborone, was a showcase of vibrant talent and fierce competition within the Botswana table tennis community. With over 60 participants competing across various categories, the event was filled with electrifying performances that captivated spectators.

In the senior men’s singles category, Bakang Maloka of Moshupa Spinners TTC emerged victorious with a commanding 3-0 win over William Olyn of Smash Maniacs TTC in the final match. Maloka’s exceptional skill and determination showcased his prowess on the table, earning him a well-deserved spot in the limelight. Semifinalists Masa Lesole and Tiro Lesomo also displayed commendable performances, highlighting the high level of competition in the event.

Tshepiso Rebatenne of Nhabe TTC claimed the senior women’s singles title with a resounding 3-0 victory over Olorato Ramagapu of Moshupa Spinners TTC. Rebatenne’s stellar performance demonstrated her exceptional talent and dedication to the sport. Namibo Mbulawa of Dithubaruba TTC and Tsholofelo Gaokgalemelwe of Smash Maniacs TTC also made significant contributions to the intensity of the competition as semifinalists.

In the Under 15 boys category, Reneilwe Lekorwe of Smash Maniacs TTC secured the championship title by defeating Thato Kgongwana of Bontleng/Ithuteng with a score of 3-1. His remarkable skill and composure under pressure were evident throughout the match. Tinashe Dzvaka of Bontleng/Ithuteng and Lefa Tsiaka of Maikano showcased promising talent as semifinalists, showcasing the potential of the younger generation of table tennis players.

The Under 15 girls category featured a thrilling battle between sisters Lilian and Gabriella Tsiaka of Maikano TTC, with Lilian emerging victorious with a flawless 3-0 win over her sibling. Setsile Mothudi and Masa Motlhabane of Maikano also delivered commendable performances as semifinalists, highlighting Maikano’s dominance in the category.

Reflecting on the event, BTTA spokesperson Tshegofatso Malepa emphasized the significance of the championship in showcasing the talent and competitiveness within the Botswana table tennis community. Malepa expressed gratitude to Phoenix Assurance Botswana for their continued support, recognizing the pivotal role sponsorship plays in the development and growth of table tennis in Botswana.

Looking ahead, BTTA has partnered with Turn Star Holdings Limited for the upcoming Africa Youth Championships and Commonwealth Youth Championships to be held on the Game City rooftop grounds in Gaborone. These championships will take place on July 15-21 and July 23-28 respectively, providing a platform for young table tennis players to showcase their skills on an international stage. The partnership between BTTA and Turn Star Holdings Limited signifies a commitment to the development and promotion of table tennis in Botswana and beyond.
