Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface has expressed his disappointment at missing the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast due to injury. The striker had to withdraw from the Super Eagles squad after suffering a groin injury in training, which ruled him out of the competition. A statement from Leverkusen confirmed that Boniface had undergone a successful operation but would be sidelined from competitive football for the next three months.
Speaking to Leverkusen’s media, Boniface admitted that missing the AFCON and upcoming games for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga was a difficult pill to swallow. He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football but emphasized the need to stay focused and return to the game stronger.
Despite being unable to take the field, Boniface watched his team’s last Bundesliga game and voiced his support for his teammates. He expressed his joy at Leverkusen’s victory over Augsburg, foreseeing continued support for the team until he returns from injury.
Looking ahead to his recovery, the 23-year-old recognized the need for patience and taking it one step at a time. Both he and the club anticipate a recovery period of ten to twelve weeks before he is fully fit to return to competitive football.
With a positive outlook and determination to come back stronger, Boniface reassured his fans and teammates of his unwavering support. While missing out on the AFCON and Bundesliga games was a setback, he remains committed to his rehabilitation and looks forward to making a successful return to the field.
