The Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu has confirmed that Turkish aid to Somalia will continue despite a recent terrorist attack on Turkish aid workers in the country. The aid worker, Abdurrahim Yoruk, lost his life in a “heinous” terrorist attack in Mogadishu’s Garasbaley neighborhood while on his way to distribute food aid at internally displaced persons camps in the capital.
The body of Yoruk was sent to Turkey for burial, with Somali Cabinet ministers, members of the federal parliament, and other senior government officials joining the Turkish ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktas, in seeing off the body at the Adan Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. The Somali national emergency and disaster management agency chief extended his condolences to Aktas on behalf of the people and government of Somalia.
The agency highlighted that the Turkish citizens were engaged in a noble humanitarian effort of providing iftar meals to underprivileged families in Mogadishu during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu expressed gratitude for the support received and wished Allah’s grace on the member of the Somali security forces who lost his life in the attack.
The embassy also wished a speedy recovery to the injured who were undergoing treatment at Mogadishu’s Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan Hospital, a facility renovated by the Turkish government. The embassy emphasized that Turkey would continue to provide steadfast support to Somalia in its fight against terrorism.
Somalia has long been plagued by insecurity, with terrorist groups like al-Shabaab and Daesh/ISIS posing significant threats. Al-Shabaab has intensified attacks since Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared an “all-out war” on the group.
Turkey, a close ally of Somalia, has made significant investments in education, infrastructure, health, and humanitarian aid in the Horn of Africa country. Turkey maintains its largest embassy in Africa in Mogadishu and has also established its largest overseas military facility there to train the Somali national army.
Despite the challenges posed by terrorism, Turkey remains committed to supporting Somalia in its development and security efforts. The partnership between the two countries continues to strengthen, with Turkey reaffirming its commitment to providing aid and assistance to Somalia. The Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu’s statement underscores the importance of solidarity and cooperation in the face of adversity.
