The main argument put forward by the special prosecutor near the court for the repression of economic crimes and terrorism (CRIET) and the director of the Benin penitentiary agency would be the Covid-19 restrictions that are still in place in prisons.

But after the reaction of the lawyers of the detainee, in which they highlighted the inadequacies of the arguments put forward to justify the refusal, Deputy Kamel Ouassagari made public a correspondence addressed to the Minister of Justice and the director of the penitentiary agency to request authorization to visit the former minister.

Indeed, according to the arguments to justify the refusal, only group visits are prohibited in prisons due to Covid-19 barrier measures. This argument also does not hold according to the honorable Ouassagari who claims to have written to the authorities since November 2023. But to this day, his correspondence has remained unanswered.

The Deputy of the party Les Démocrates requested through his correspondence addressed to the Minister of Justice and the director of the penitentiary agency, authorization to visit Reckya Madougou, their party’s rejected candidate in the last presidential election.

However, from explanations from the Director of the Benin Penitentiary Agency and the special prosecutor near the Criet, it appears that deputies can individually visit Reckya Madougou.

The correspondence made public by the deputy.
