Wearing black every Thursday to express dissatisfaction with the governance of the so-called rupture regime is the new initiative of the opposition in Benin.
The communication secretary of the party Les Démocrates, Guy Dossou Mitokpè, and some young people opposed to the current governance initiated the movement “Black Thursdays” on Thursday, April 18, 2024.
In a video posted on social media, this group of young people calls for unity and action to confront the current governance of the country. They propose the implementation of “Black Thursdays” for peaceful demonstrations against the current regime.
In his statement, Guy Mitokpè describes the daily suffering of the population, mentioning the tears of mothers, the despair of young people, and a deep sense of abandonment felt by many Beninese people.
For the former MP, “Black Thursdays” represent a symbolic form of protest against the current government and seek to bring together all sectors of Beninese society in a collective expression of disapproval and resistance to the current governance.
“You are young, you are a woman, you are old, you are old, you are Beninese. All we ask of you is that from now on, on Thursdays, wear black. Wear black to say enough is enough… Black Thursdays are our way, in a peaceful way, to fight against this regime. It is our way, in a peaceful way, to say no to exclusion. It is a way for us to say no to the high cost of living,” said Guy Mitokpè.
This initiative of “Black Thursdays” echoes that of the “Red Wednesdays” initiated in 2013 by some civil society organizations to oppose a constitutional reform project during the second term of Boni Yayi. Most of the initiators of the Red Wednesday are now political actors and support the policies of President Patrice Talon.
