During the press conference held on Wednesday, April 17, the Director General of the Republican Police (Dgpr), General Soumaïla Yaya, strongly criticized the deputy of the Republican Bloc (BR), Abdoulaye Gounou.
During the press conference held by the police following the police violence observed during road code enforcement operations, the Dgpr responded to the deputy of the Republican Bloc (BR), a party supporting the government, Abdoulaye Gounou.
In his remarks, the police chief emphasized that the deputy is not in a position to give lessons to the Republican Police. According to General Soumaïla Yaya, “the deputy’s statements only concern him.”
To give lessons, one must behave properly oneself. According to the Dgpr, “he has already had problems with the police for refusing to respect speed limits. Therefore, what he might say would not be credible in the eyes of the police.”
In reality, the parliamentarian had criticized the police as a whole following acts of police brutality towards a citizen in Natitingou, captured in a widely circulated video on social media.
“For some time now, we have been observing more and more police abuses on our territory and clashes between the police and the population in certain areas. This is not a good image for the rule of law that we are gradually establishing in Benin,” lamented the parliamentarian.
“We observe and do not agree with this way of the police acting. The police are at the service of the people. The police should not become an instrument of trouble, disturbing the peace of our peaceful populations,” lamented the parliamentarian.
