The lawyer Nourou Dine Saka Saley is calling on the deputies of the party Les Démocrates to activate article 150 of the electoral code by individually submitting their resignation.
The young political actor made this proposal to the Democrats after the adoption of the new electoral code on the night of March 5th to 6th.
According to him, the performance of the 28 deputies of the party Les Démocrates present in the National Assembly is mixed. For Nouroudine Saka Saley, the 28 deputies of the party Les Démocrates should resign individually since they represent more than one fifth of all elected officials in the Assembly. By doing so, they will create an institutional impact.
According to Nourou Dine Saka Saley, the deputies of the party Les Démocrates have no added value on the political scene other than their minority blocking the revision of the constitution.
“Outside of the modification of the constitution where they have the minority blocking, what is the added value of their presence in the National Assembly? What is the added value of the Democratic deputies in the National Assembly in terms of major laws, of great interest to the republic?” asked the lawyer.
He suggests that the Democratic deputies resign in order to implement article 150 of the current electoral code in Benin.
“If I were in the place of the Democratic deputies, I would use an article of the electoral code which states that if the parliament is deprived of one-fifth of its members, elections are held again, it is in the electoral code, I think the party Les Démocrates should start thinking about it,” the lawyer stated.
For him, the Democratic deputies are in the Assembly and are being mistreated but without any added value for the Republic. “You are there in the National Assembly, you are being mistreated, they are putting you in uncertain conditions for the next presidential election, what’s the point of continuing to stay there? If you really want the detainees to be released…, create an institutional impact, you must all resign. You are 28 and the National Assembly will be obliged to organize elections in all the constituencies where you are present… This is the only way today for the opposition to be heard,” the lawyer noted.
According to article 150 of the current code, “when, despite the call of the substitute candidates, isolated vacancies reach one-fifth of the number of deputies, a complementary replacement election is held. However, these vacancies will not be filled if they occur within six months before the end of the legislature’s terms.”
