In a post on social media, Cebio Soukou reacted to his non-selection with the Cheetahs for the March international break. The midfielder announced a temporary break from his international career.
Cebio Soukou is temporarily putting the national team on hold. In a post on his Facebook page this Saturday, the midfielder announced his decision to take a temporary break with the Cheetahs. His absence from the squad called up to face Ivory Coast and Senegal during the FIFA matchdays this March was the catalyst for this decision.
In his message, Soukou expressed his attachment to his country and its national colors, but stated his disagreement with the current national team coach. “We are one nation and my heart bears the yellow, green and red colors. A coach cannot change that. I will always wear our jersey with pride and honor but not under the current coach,” he wrote on Facebook.
This statement follows the explanations given by the Cheetahs’ coach, Gernot Rohr, at the beginning of March when the list of called-up players was announced. Rohr justified Soukou’s absence by stating that the quality of his performance was not sufficient to be included in the list, also expressing his desire for a younger team.
