The Beninese government announced in a cabinet meeting on Thursday, April 11, 2024, the support for autistic children through the implementation of a pilot project for the integrated care of autistic children in the municipalities of Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi.

In Benin, the government will be providing support for autistic children in at least two municipalities. This decision was made during the last cabinet meeting in favor of autistic children, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired communication and social interactions.

According to the government’s explanations, children affected by autism are stigmatized and rejected by their surroundings, leading to difficulties in community life. These disorders have a significant impact on the child’s school life, social integration, and family cohesion. The care needed for these children requires significant investment that parents are struggling to afford.

In order to facilitate appropriate care for this condition, the Government has initiated the pilot project for the integrated care of autistic children. The objective is to implement a set of actions aimed at providing educational support, healthcare assistance, and personalized social support to the target population.

To achieve this, the government intends to network professionals in the field to ensure better sharing of experiences and best practices in order to meet the specific needs of autistic children more effectively.
