In the afternoon of Wednesday, April 3, 2024, in Azowlissè, in the commune of Adjohoun, an operation to repress traffic code violations quickly turned into clashes between law enforcement and residents.

According to testimonies reported by “Les 4 Vérités”, law enforcement officers were chasing a motorcycle taxi driver who was carrying two passengers, one of whom was without a helmet. This passenger tried to flee to a house, but was apprehended by the police in his escape.

But the operation almost turned into a scene of violence between law enforcement, the motorcyclist, and his passengers who found support in the population. The protesters tried to attack the local police station but were dispersed.

During the skirmish, there were injuries that were transported to the Adjohoun zone hospital.

As a reminder, the police launched the repression of traffic code violations on March 1, 2024. According to the police spokesperson, in the coastal area alone, 500 motorcyclists are arrested each day as part of the operation.
