The special prosecutor of the court for the repression of economic crimes and terrorism, Mario Metonou, has commented on the refusal of some members of parliament to visit Reckya Madougou.

On Wednesday, March 27th, a delegation of MPs from the party Les Démocrates was denied visitation to Reckya Madougou. The controversy surrounding this refusal prompted prosecutor Mario Metonou to break his silence.

According to the Special Prosecutor for the Court for the Repression of Economic Crimes and Terrorism (CRIET), as reported by Le Patriote, “If the MPs were to visit her (Reckya Madougou) individually, there would be no problem, but if they go as a group, they cannot be allowed.”

According to prosecutor Mario Metonou, since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and the accompanying barrier measures, group visits to prisons are no longer allowed. These barrier measures, he clarifies, remain in effect.

But on the same morning of Wednesday, the same group of MPs was able to visit the constitutionalist Joël Aïvo. This visit was reportedly due to an error by the prison warden. And according to sources, he has been relieved of his duties.

“He should have referred to me or to the Director of the Benin Penitentiary Agency. This is a serious mistake,” said the special prosecutor of the CRIET.
