The Beninese electricity company (SBEE) is determined to put an end to its fraudulent subscribers. It has just launched a new legal procedure against 5 new dishonest customers.

The electricity distribution company has initiated a new legal procedure against five subscribers for “electricity theft”.

According to Banouto, two of the five defendants have been placed in preventive detention, two others are being prosecuted without preventive detention, and the fifth is currently at large.

The individuals involved are accused of multiple cases of fraud on their meters located in the Pahou district. Some of them have tampered with their meters and use electric energy for their commercial activities. Others have made direct connections.

Instead of being connected to their meters, they directly connect to the power line and use electric energy without limit. These subscribers, through these cases of fraud, power their fish markets, bars, offices, and other electricity-consuming activities.

According to the SBEE representative, the accused have accumulated a total debt of more than 40 million FCFA to the company. This amount includes unpaid amounts for electricity consumption as well as penalties associated with acts of fraud. Among the 40 million FCFA, one accused with two meters will have to pay nearly 14 million FCFA.

After the debates, the Court scheduled the next hearing for May 20, 2024. The judge ordered the defendants to quickly settle their repayment debts before this date.
