The Special Court for Economic Crimes and Terrorism handed down a decision regarding several cybercrime cases on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

A significant number of cybercriminals were sentenced to long prison terms for online fraud. The convictions were pronounced on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, by the Special Court for Economic Crimes and Terrorism (CRIET). The sentences for the 24 cybercriminals range between 55 and 84 months of firm imprisonment.

In its judgments, the Special Court found 24 cybercriminals guilty of fraud through computer systems. By presenting excerpts from their mobile phones during the hearings, the Court noted that the accused individuals had engaged in cybercriminal activities.

Some pretend to be fictional financial institutions or donors, while others offer sexual services at varying rates or pretend to be recruiters for the Freemasonry.

In its decision, the Court sentenced nine (9) young individuals to eighty-four (84) months of firm imprisonment and a fine of two million FCFA each. Eight others were sentenced to 60 months of firm imprisonment and a fine of two million FCFA. Finally, seven young individuals received 55 months of firm imprisonment and a fine of one million FCFA.
