Belgium reaffirms its commitment to Burkina Faso through a dialogue approach
Ouagadougou, March 19, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabe Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, received a delegation from the Kingdom of Belgium in Ouagadougou on Tuesday to reaffirm their commitment to Burkina Faso through an approach of listening and dialogue.
A delegation from the Kingdom of Belgium, led by Jean Jacques Quairiat and Bart De Groof, respectively Ambassador to Burkina Faso and Special Envoy for the Sahel, was received in an audience on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabe Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré.
The delegation stated that they came to reaffirm the commitment of the Kingdom of Belgium to Burkina Faso through an approach of listening and dialogue.
According to the Special Envoy of the Kingdom of Belgium for the Sahel, this commitment is particularly meaningful in light of the humanitarian situation in Burkina Faso.
The objective of this visit was also to gather from the Burkinabe diplomatic chief the vision of his country and other countries of the Economic Community of Sahel States (ECSS) on the partnership with the Kingdom of Belgium.
Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré appreciated this approach and presented the type of partnership that the countries of the Sahel wish to have in this particular context.
It is a partnership based on the realities of these countries and that responds to the true aspirations of their citizens.
“The partners must avoid coming to the Sahel with their own priorities, with ready-made answers and even clichés, without having surveyed the populations of this space on their real expectations,” the Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs told the delegation members.
He emphasized that “this way of doing things does not allow for appropriate responses to the problems that the populations and the countries are experiencing.”
For him, it is more than ever time for partners to have a fairer view of the situation in the Sahel, deploring the misreading by some media outlets, which present military transitions as a problem rather than a consequence of inadequate management of the security crisis that has prevailed for eight years now.
After listening to the insights provided by Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, the delegation stated that they are leaving enlightened.
They promise to report the vision presented by the Burkinabe diplomatic chief to the Belgian authorities, as well as at the level of the European Union, of which Belgium currently holds the presidency.
