The newly appointed sporting director of Bayern Munich, Max Eberl, recently shared his perspective on the potential transfer of Xabi Alonso to the German champions. Eberl, who previously attempted to sign Alonso for Borussia Moenchengladbach, emphasized that the pursuit of the Spanish midfielder may not be a priority for Bayern at the moment.

Having been appointed as the managing director of sport for Bayern until 2027, Eberl brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles at Borussia Moenchengladbach and RB Leipzig, where he gained recognition for his ability to identify promising young talents. However, his immediate focus now lies in finding a new coach for Bayern, as current manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to depart in the summer.

“We have to put the puzzle together, with players and a new coach,” Eberl stated during a press conference. Despite his prior efforts to bring Alonso to Moenchengladbach in 2021 while managing Real Sociedad’s B team, Eberl refrained from commenting on specific names in relation to the coaching vacancy at Bayern. He acknowledged his admiration for Alonso as a coach and cited the Spaniard’s decision to gain more experience before making a move.

In addition to Alonso, media reports have linked former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane with Bayern. Eberl, however, downplayed the notion of being a savior for the club and emphasized that rebuilding Bayern is a process that does not require rocket science. With a background in Bayern’s youth system and a brief stint in the first team before moving to Bochum, Eberl expressed his excitement at returning to the club.

The decision to part ways with Tuchel followed a series of defeats that had put Bayern eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race. Despite the mutual agreement between Tuchel and the club, the coach expressed his desire to continue at Bayern. Additionally, concerns were raised about the potential departure of Canadian full-back Alphonso Davies, with rumors linking him to Real Madrid. Eberl stressed the importance of proactive decision-making in contract negotiations to prevent losing valuable assets on free transfers.

As Bayern faces challenges in both domestic and European competitions, Eberl’s arrival marks a new chapter for the club as they navigate through a transitional period. The search for a new coach and potential roster changes will require strategic planning and careful consideration to ensure Bayern’s continued success in the future.
