Chimaobi Augustine Azubuike, a native of Imo State, made headlines at the sixth Opobo Marathon by securing an unexpected victory over more established runners from various parts of the country. His triumph earned him the coveted N500,000 prize money, defying expectations and surprising spectators.
Leading up to the competition, the spotlight was on the runners from Plateau State, known for their prowess in long-distance races dating back to the days of Abbas Mohammed and Yohana Waziri. However, it was Azubuike, participating in only his second Opobo Marathon, who stole the show by showcasing his mastery of the course and claiming victory. Following closely behind were Yusuf Babije from Plateau State in second place and Eric Constance in third, earning them N200,000 and N100,000 respectively.
In the women’s category, Blessing Bulus, also from Plateau State, emerged victorious, clinching the N500,000 prize money. Charity Agofure from Delta State secured second place, earning N200,000, while Saibu Yetunde from Ogun State rounded out the top three, taking home N100,000. Jaja Tamuno and Queen Nwidah claimed the top positions in the indigenous and youngest runner categories, earning N50,000 each.
Reflecting on his unexpected win, Azubuike expressed his surprise at emerging victorious, particularly given the presence of more experienced runners. He credited his success to his childhood readings about Opobo, which inspired him to visit the town and participate in the marathon.
King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, the Amanyanabo of Opobo, who participated in the leisure category, commended the level of competition and the diverse pool of athletes representing various states. Meanwhile, Iyowuna Cookey, the Team Lead for the Opobo Marathon, expressed gratitude to the Amanyanabo, as well as sponsors including Platform Petroleum Limited, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), D’Consiglories Nig Limited, and the Opu ALABO Foundation, athletes, and dignitaries for their support in ensuring the success of the event.
Notable attendees at the marathon included Enyiada Cookey-Gam, the Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Council; Austin Opara, former Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives; Adokiye Tombomieye, former NNPC Executive Vice President of the Upstream Sector; Senibo Sody Peterside; Blessing Fubara, CEO of D’Consiglories Nig. Limited; Alabo Chris Finebone, former Commissioner for Information in Rivers State; Emma Okah; Prof Iyalla Peterside; and retired Super Eagles goalkeeper Bishop Idah Peterside.
