The Sonwa Sakuba Institute for the Performing Arts is thrilled to invite talented and passionate singers, dancers, and actors aged 18 and above to audition for the vibrant and powerful production of “Sarafina!” directed and choreographed by Sonwa Sakuba. The auditions will take place at the East London Guild Theatre at 8am.
Interested artists are required to prepare one song that showcases their vocal ability. Additionally, they should be prepared to demonstrate their dancing and acting skills on the day of the audition. It is recommended that participants bring water and wear comfortable clothes for dancing. However, jeans are not allowed.
“Sarafina!” is a 1992 musical drama film based on the late Mbongeni Ngema’s 1988 musical of the same name. It was directed by Darrell Roodt and written by Ngema and William Nicholson. The plot centers around students involved in the Soweto Uprising in opposition to the implementation of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. The film stars Leleti Khumalo, Miriam Makeba, John Kani, Ngema, and Whoopi Goldberg, and premiered on May 11, 1992, at the Cannes Film Festival.
