The Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), Francis Atwoli, has publicly voiced his support for Raila Odinga as the candidate for the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) Commission. Atwoli believes that Odinga’s leadership in this position would solidify Kenya’s influence at both the continental and global levels, leading to increased direct and indirect investments in the country.
Speaking during a press briefing in Kisumu, Atwoli emphasized the benefits of Odinga’s potential AU leadership, stating that it would provide valuable funding for Kenya’s programs and infrastructure development. He also highlighted the significance of Odinga’s position as the President of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), which would enable him to strengthen the continental labor movement.
Atwoli acknowledged that Odinga’s bid for the top AU job has received backing from influential figures, including President William Ruto, further strengthening his candidacy. He expressed confidence in Odinga’s capability and extensive network of international connections, making it challenging for any potential competitors to contest against him.
Addressing concerns about Odinga’s involvement in local politics after his term, Atwoli urged his supporters to embrace the potential change, emphasizing the significance of the AU top job in comparison to continued engagement in local politics. He emphasized Odinga’s stature and experience, portraying him as well-positioned to address the challenges facing Africa and the world, particularly conflicts in countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Ethiopia, and military coups in West Africa.
Despite his previous support for President Ruto’s government, Atwoli reiterated his recognition of Odinga’s leadership capabilities and capacity to promote unity of purpose at the continental level. He pointed out Odinga’s prior experience as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure, further affirming his readiness to take on the role of AU chairman.
Atwoli’s endorsement of Odinga’s AU chairmanship bid aligns with his previous support for Odinga’s presidential campaign in the lead-up to the 2022 General Election. He emphasized Odinga’s potential to lead Africa and work towards ensuring peace and stability on the continent.
In summary, Atwoli’s backing of Raila Odinga for the AU Commission chairmanship reflects his belief in Odinga’s leadership qualities and the positive impact his tenure could have on Kenya and the broader African continent.
