At a young age, Atuhaire began her journey as an activist, standing up against domestic violence in her family and defending her mother. This early experience shaped her passion for advocating for women’s rights and social justice. After studying journalism and law, Atuhaire transitioned from mainstream media to focus on impact journalism and exploring different avenues for activism.
In 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown, Atuhaire began using social media platforms, particularly Twitter (now X), to bring to light various social issues. Her online exhibitions gained traction, especially when she delved into exposing corruption and misconduct within institutions like the Law Development Centre and Parliament. These revelations sparked public interest and engagement, highlighting the power of social media as a platform for advocacy and accountability.
Alongside her collaborators, including Jimmy Spire Ssentongo and Godwin Toko, Atuhaire spearheaded exhibitions focusing on NGOs and Parliament, drawing attention to critical issues and prompting discussions among the public. Despite facing backlash and threats, Atuhaire remains steadfast in her commitment to uncovering the truth and holding those in power accountable.
The recent recognition Atuhaire received through the International Women of Courage Award and the EU Human Rights Defenders Award serves as a validation of her tireless efforts and dedication to activism. These accolades not only honor her work but also provide her with a platform to amplify her message and attract valuable partnerships and support.
Through her work with Agora, a non-profit organization focused on evidence-based activism and investigative journalism, Atuhaire continues to shine a light on injustice and corruption in Uganda. Despite the challenges and risks that come with her activism, she remains determined to advocate for positive change and empower marginalized communities.
Looking ahead, Atuhaire remains vigilant and committed to her cause, ready to tackle whatever challenges may come her way.
