The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) recently concluded training for 25 criminal investigations officers from the Somali Police Force (SPF) in order to enhance their capabilities in investigating financial crimes, ultimately aiding the government in combating terrorism.
The intensive training provided the participants with skills to detect a variety of crimes, including money laundering, terrorist financing, and other illegal transactional activities. ATMIS Police Training and Development Coordinator Samuel Asiedu Okanta emphasized the significance of this training in deepening the officers’ understanding of financial intelligence methodologies, tools, and investigative techniques.
Conducted by ATMIS police trainers, the course encompassed both theoretical and practical sessions to expand the participants’ knowledge and capacity in financial intelligence, investigative methods, procedures in combating financial crimes, and the financial intelligence cycle. This training is part of ATMIS’ efforts to strengthen the SPF’s capacity to effectively take over full security responsibilities upon ATMIS’ exit from Somalia in December.
Nur Gedi Mohamed, SPF’s deputy director of training and planning, highlighted the importance of training for the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in disrupting the financing systems of criminal networks to combat financial crimes in the country. In addition to financial crime investigation, the participants also received intensive training in basic fingerprinting techniques to enhance their ability to utilize fingerprints in upholding justice, protecting communities, and ensuring the rule of law.
ATMIS police play a crucial role in supporting the Somali security forces through specialized training, mentoring, and advising, as well as providing operational support through joint patrols and protection of vital installations.
The completion of this training program marks another step towards enhancing Somalia’s capacity to tackle financial crimes and terrorism, ultimately contributing to the country’s overall security and stability.
