Napoli’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League took a significant hit after a 3-0 defeat at home to Atalanta, with goals from Aleksei Miranchuk, Gianluca Scamacca, and Teun Koopmeiners securing the win for the visitors. The defeat left Napoli in seventh place, nine points behind fourth-placed Bologna, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot.

Despite the disappointing result, Napoli showed support for their teammate Juan Jesus, who had been embroiled in a racism controversy. The players took a knee in solidarity with Jesus before the game, while fans in the stands chanted “no to racism.” The controversy stemmed from allegations that Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi had directed a racial slur at Jesus during a previous match, which Acerbi denied and was subsequently cleared of by the Italian Football Federation’s disciplinary tribunal.

Jesus started the match against Atalanta but was at fault for the second goal, scored by Scamacca. Napoli struggled to make an impact in the game, with Miranchuk opening the scoring in the 26th minute before Scamacca doubled Atalanta’s lead just before half-time. Despite hitting the woodwork twice through Zielinski and Osimhen, Napoli were unable to find a way back into the game.

Atalanta’s victory boosted their own chances of qualifying for the Champions League, with the team now just one point behind fifth-placed Roma with a game in hand. Both Roma and Bologna will have to face Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona before the end of the season, adding further intrigue to the race for European qualification.

The defeat to Atalanta was another setback in Napoli’s disappointing title defense, with the team failing to meet the high standards set in previous seasons. The players were met with boos from the home fans as they left the field at full time, highlighting the frustration surrounding the team’s performances.

Despite the defeat, Napoli will look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures and regain momentum in their pursuit of a top-four finish. The outcome of the race for Champions League qualification remains uncertain, with several teams in contention as the season reaches its conclusion.
