Nigerian singer Ayra Starr recently opened up in an interview with American media giant Billboard News about how she was admitted to university at the age of 14 and how she managed to balance her education with her pursuit of a music career.
Starr revealed that her mother played a significant role in her decision to prioritize education before pursuing music. She explained that her mother had used music as a way to encourage her to excel in her studies from a young age. According to Starr, her mother made it clear that she had to graduate from university before fully delving into her music career.
Despite initially hesitating to relocate with her family from Benin Republic to Lagos, her mother’s assurances that Lagos was the right place for her to pursue her musical aspirations eventually convinced her. “She insisted that if I want to do music, I would have to finish school first,” Starr said in the interview.
In Nigeria, most students usually complete secondary school around the age of 15 or 16. However, Starr knew that waiting until that age to finish her secondary education would not align with her dream of becoming a teenage pop star. So, she made the decision to take the entrance exam for university (known as JAMB in Nigeria) at a younger age to ensure she could pursue both her education and music career simultaneously.
Starr recalled that while her exam results may not have been outstanding, they were sufficient to gain admission to a prestigious university for a three-year course in International Relations. She emphasized that immediately after her graduation, she began uploading music covers online, and in the same year, she signed with the Mavin Records label, marking the start of her professional music career.
The singer’s journey from university to a successful music career at a young age showcases the determination and dedication she displayed in pursuing her passions. She managed to fulfill her academic responsibilities while also making strides in the music industry, a feat that is commendable and inspiring for aspiring young artists.
Starr’s revelation about her early entry into university and her commitment to both education and music serves as a reminder that with hard work and focus, it is possible to pursue multiple passions and achieve success in different areas. Her story also highlights the important role played by her mother in guiding and supporting her as she navigated the path to fulfilling her dreams.
As Ayra Starr continues to make her mark in the music industry, her experience serves as a source of inspiration for young individuals who aspire to pursue their interests and talents while also prioritizing their education and personal development. Her story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the unwavering support of loved ones in achieving one’s dreams.
