An upcoming art exhibition titled ‘I was Born a Girl’ is set to open at the Alliance Française de Lusaka on March 18, 2024. The exhibition seeks to shed light on marginalized groups of women who are often excluded from societal and community discussions. Finnish artist Minna Pietarinen’s peer-supporting art and poetry will be the focal point of the exhibition, focusing on women’s and girls’ rights around the world.

Scheduled to run from March 19 to March 23, the exhibition will feature an opening reception and panel discussion titled ‘silenced voices.’ The theme of the exhibition revolves around equality, using poetry and art to emphasize human and women’s rights globally. Pietarinen’s works will showcase inspiring women from various cultures who have fought for women’s rights on a global scale. Each painting will also represent different sustainable development goals.

The panel discussion associated with the ‘I was Born a Girl’ concept aims to amplify the voices of marginalized women who are often left out of important dialogues within society and communities. One of the featured paintings will be a portrait of Musonda Mumba, a Zambian environmentalist known for her work in water security and environmental issues. Mumba currently serves as the Secretary-General of the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands.

The ‘I was Born a Girl’ exhibition originally premiered for Women’s Day 2023 in Mexico City, attracting 26,000 visitors over a few months. It later made its European debut at the Nordic Business Forum in Helsinki in September 2023. Leading up to Women’s Day 2024, the exhibition will tour South Africa, Mozambique, and Zambia, with events hosted by Finnish Embassies. Future plans include taking the exhibition to the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

As the exhibition aims to provoke thought and raise awareness about women’s rights, it serves as a platform to celebrate the achievements of women who have worked tirelessly for gender equality. Through art and poetry, ‘I was Born a Girl’ challenges societal norms and encourages dialogue on important issues facing women around the world.

In conclusion, the ‘I was Born a Girl’ art exhibition promises to be a powerful and thought-provoking display of talent and advocacy for women’s rights. By highlighting the stories and struggles of marginalized women, the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the importance of gender equality and the need to amplify the voices of all women, regardless of their background or circumstances.
