On March 25, 2024, Abdel Mahmoud Abu, the Secretary-General of the Ansar Affairs Committee in Sudan, made a compelling plea for an end to the ongoing war in the country. As a prominent religious figure, Abu emphasized the importance of war being a legitimate means to prevent corruption, repel aggression, and deter injustice. However, he stressed that any conflict must have a clear purpose and must not result in further suffering for the people.
In an interview with Sudan Tribune, Abu, who now leads the Ansar sect following the passing of Imam Sadiq al-Mahdi, stated, “If the war doesn’t achieve these goals, it becomes invalid.” He expressed deep concern about the toll the war has taken on civilians, citing loss of life, destruction of property, and a widening national divide. Abu warned that continuing the conflict would only lead to more atrocities and ultimately the collapse of the country.
Abu called for decision-makers to be pressured and appealed to on a moral level to stop the bloodshed. He emphasized that true courage lies in ending the war rather than perpetuating it, citing a Hadith that highlights the gravity of engaging in conflict between Muslims.
While acknowledging that religious leaders may not have the direct power to end the war, Abu underlined their role in offering guidance and fostering reconciliation. He emphasized the importance of clarifying the legal justifications for war, distinguishing between legitimate self-defense and unnecessary conflict.
Abu made it clear that resistance is permissible in defense of oneself, honor, property, and homeland, but stressed the need to differentiate between valid justifications for war and the continuation of conflict for its own sake. He highlighted the Ansar Affairs Committee’s focus on providing guidance and advocating for an end to the war, acknowledging that there can be no true victors in such a destructive situation.
In response to accusations against the Tagagum coalition, which the Umma Party is affiliated with, Abu refuted claims that the party provides political cover for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He pointed out the Umma Party’s public opposition to the war and its efforts to promote peace between the armed forces and the RSF.
Abu also addressed reports of human rights violations by the RSF paramilitary forces, reiterating the Ansar’s condemnation of the war and its resulting atrocities. He emphasized that ending the conflict is crucial to prevent further violations and called for an immediate halt to the war.
Recently, the NUP has called on the Tagadum coalition to reconsider its position towards the RSF, which is accused of committing crimes against humanity, war crimes, and grave human rights violations. The Ansar Affairs Committee continues to advocate for peace and reconciliation amidst the ongoing conflict.
In conclusion, Abu’s impassioned plea for an end to the war in Sudan reflects his deep concern for the well-being of the people and the future of the country. He calls for all parties involved to consider the devastating consequences of prolonged conflict and work towards a peaceful resolution for the benefit of all.
