Second Near Miss between Aircraft
On the evening of Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 12:43 East Africa Time, an aircraft operated by Emirate Airways with flight number UAE722 flying at an altitude of 37,000 feet and an aircraft operated by Ethiopian Airlines with flight number ETH690 also flying at 37,000 feet almost collided, after the Mogadishu Control Center provided both aircraft with the same time and location to be present.
Shortly before the possible collision, efforts were made by Somaliland Air Traffic Controllers and the pilot of the Ethiopian Airlines aircraft, resulting in the pilot quickly changing his altitude, avoiding a collision at 39,000 feet.
Moreover, the air authorities in Mogadishu (Mogadishu Controllers) work diligently to address such incidents, which pose a threat to the safety of international flights.
The Republic of Somaliland prides itself on managing flights in its airspace with great expertise, ensuring the services they require, while also verifying the mistakes made in Mogadishu, which can lead to significant consequences.
We are sharing with specialized organizations and the world at large that the negligence and lack of expertise within the Mogadishu Tower poses a danger to airspace navigation.
You can imagine the stress faced by the Controller in Mogadishu, receiving criticism and blame from the pilot seeking guidance, asking why they were directed by someone else.
