The street carnival parades on Tuesday in the municipality of Cacuaco, in Luanda, were marked by messages calling for greater investment in the agriculture and fishing sectors. Participants emphasized the importance of these areas, which are considered the ‘strong points’ of the economic development of Cacuaco, due to its agricultural potential in the commune of Funda, known as the green belt of the country’s capital.

The competitors used their songs to advocate for more attention to public safety, health, transport, education, and roads. The parade, accompanied by the rhythm of the semba dance, included groups from urban districts such as Sequele, Cacuaco-sede, Kikolo, Mulenvos de Baixo, and the commune of Funda, making it the biggest cultural festival in the area. In addition to these groups, entertainment troupes from the municipal administration, schools, universities, and zungueiras (women who sell goods informally) also participated in the parade.

Despite being a street parade, it was a competition, and the organizers have allocated prizes for the winners. The first-place group will receive two and a half million kwanzas, the second-place winner will receive one million and five hundred, and the third-place group will receive one million kwanzas.

Henriques Neves, the local director of Culture and Tourism, emphasized the importance of reviving the ‘mystique of playing carnival’ in the municipality. He expressed the need to preserve and promote the cultural significance of carnival celebrations in Cacuaco.

Cacuaco has an estimated population of 1,237,477 inhabitants and a territorial area of 571 square kilometers, making it a significant municipality within Luanda. The emphasis on agricultural potential and the cultural significance of the carnival celebrations highlight the importance of this area in both economic and cultural development. It is clear that the inhabitants of Cacuaco are keen to promote investment in key sectors such as agriculture and fishing, and the annual carnival parade serves as a platform to advocate for these important issues.
