Anambra State lawmakers belonging to the Labour Party (LP) in the State House of Assembly have called upon President Bola Tinubu and all 36 state governors to address the pressing security challenges and suffering experienced by the populace. This demand comes shortly after the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) suspended its nationwide hunger protest. The legislators, comprising eight members out of the 30-member assembly, have urged the President and governors to halt work on all other sectors, including infrastructure, for the next six months and declare a state of emergency on security and hunger in the country.
The LP lawmakers, including Nkechi Ogbuefi, Henry Mbachu, Jude Ifeanyi Umennajiego, Fred Ezenwa, Kingsley Udemezue, Justice Azuka, Paul Obi, and Patrick Okafor, released a joint communique after an emergency caucus meeting at the state Assembly Complex in Awka, the capital city. In their statement, they made specific appeals to the federal and state governments:
– The President should suspend work on all sectors, especially infrastructure, for the next six months and declare a state of emergency on security and hunger.
– All state governors, including Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, are urged to suspend infrastructural development for the next six months and declare a state of emergency on security and hunger.
– The LP House of Assembly members are willing to forfeit their basic salary for six months to contribute to alleviating the suffering of the masses.
The lawmakers emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that despite the conclusion of campaigns and elections, the majority of Nigerians are still grappling with severe challenges. They commended former governor Peter Obi for his efforts towards national stability and growth, acknowledging his selfless commitment to improving the nation’s welfare.
