Zimbabwe has initiated a cholera vaccination campaign with the goal of immunizing more than two million people against the waterborne disease. The vaccine, which is administered orally, provides protection for a minimum of six months. The campaign kicked off in Kuwadzana near Harare, with a focus on schoolchildren and door-to-door initiatives by health workers.

The cholera outbreak, which has been ongoing since February 2023, has resulted in the loss of over 400 lives and has infected more than 20,000 individuals. In response, Zimbabwe is set to receive a total of 2.3 million vaccine doses from UNICEF and the World Health Organisation. These doses will be deployed to 29 of the most severely affected districts, with over 892,000 doses already distributed, as reported by the health ministry.

Cholera is typically spread through contaminated food or water and is commonly found in densely populated urban areas with inadequate sanitation facilities. In light of the outbreak, the Zimbabwean government took measures in November to limit public gatherings and food vending, as well as monitor burials in areas affected by cholera following a spike in cases.

The vaccination campaign serves as a critical preventive measure against cholera in densely populated urban areas facing sanitation challenges. It is aimed at mitigating the spread of the disease and protecting the health and well-being of the population.

In conclusion, the cholera vaccination campaign in Zimbabwe is a crucial step in addressing the ongoing outbreak and preventing further spread of the disease in affected areas. With the support of international organizations and the dedication of health workers, the campaign aims to provide protection and promote public health in the face of this waterborne illness.
