Female commerce in Algeria has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, reflecting an evolving economic dynamic. The figures from the National Center for Commercial Registration (CNRC) show an upward trend, with a significant increase in the number of women engaged in various commercial activities.

Over the past five years, no less than 32,761 new female traders have entered into different economic activities in Algeria. This growth, estimated at around 20.5%, demonstrates the emergence of a dynamic female commercial sector in the country, according to data provided by the APS, based on CNRC information.

CNRC statistics show an increasing trend in the number of registered female traders in the commercial registry. By the end of 2023, there were 187,741 of them, and this number is constantly increasing, reaching 192,568 women by the end of February 2024. This increase reflects the growing commitment of women in the commercial field in Algeria.

Currently, women represent approximately 8% of the total number of traders registered with the CNRC. They mainly operate as individuals, with 175,556 registered women, and as legal entities, with 17,012 women managing businesses.

In terms of commercial activities, retail distribution and services dominate, with 48.22% and 40.05% of female traders operating in these sectors as individuals, respectively. For legal entities, services also hold a prominent place, with 40.28% of women engaged in this field.

The most attractive sectors for female traders

In detail, food commerce represents the most common activity, with 17.4% of female traders, followed by retail trade in clothing, jewelry, and cosmetics (10.2%). Activities related to accommodation and catering, as well as transport and related services, also see a strong female participation.

As for legal entities, activities such as consulting and study offices and the production of construction materials and industrial equipment attract a considerable number of female entrepreneurs.

Registration of foreign women in the commercial registry

In addition, the commercial registry also records the presence of foreign women engaged in commercial activities in Algeria. By the end of February 2024, 687 foreign women were registered, including 504 businesses led by women and 183 women acting as individuals.

The growth of female commerce in Algeria reflects a positive evolution of the economic landscape, with an increasing participation of women in various sectors. This promising trend reflects the growing importance of the role of women in the country’s economic development.
