The Legal Affairs and Liberties Committee of the Algerian National People’s Assembly made a strong move on Saturday by approving a legislative amendment aimed at punishing indecent remarks made in public.

From now on, anyone who dares to utter words that offend modesty in a public place risks a prison sentence ranging from two to six months, along with a substantial fine of 5 to 10 million centimes.

According to information reported by the Echorouk newspaper, this decision, resulting from a consensus on 15 amendments to the new penal code project, aims to ensure a healthier and more respectful public environment for everyone.

Fight against terrorism and protection of national security

The committee also agreed on a consensual wording for the new articles 63 bis and 63 bis 1.

Article 63 bis punishes any Algerian who discloses information or documents related to national security, national defense, or the national economy via social networks for the benefit of a foreign state or its agents with life imprisonment.

Article 63 bis 1 punishes anyone who discloses such information with the intention of harming the interests of the Algerian state or the stability of its institutions with 20 to 30 years in prison.

In addition, the committee provided clarification regarding the identification of terrorist individuals and entities that will now be listed on the national wanted persons list.

They also included a modification of article 87 bis 1 in their supplementary report. This aims to better identify individuals and entities that can be considered terrorists and to facilitate their inclusion on the national list.
