Oran, the capital of the west and the second largest city in the country, attracts many local and foreign visitors every summer. This is especially true after the success of the 2022 Mediterranean Games held in the city. Indeed, El Bahia experienced a significant media boost during the sporting event, exposing to the world the beauty of the treasures that the radiant city holds.
In Wahran, there is never a dull moment, as the bustling city offers activities for all tastes and ages, including some that do not require any expenditure from the visitor.
The following list enumerates the free places to visit during your stay in Oran.
The fort and the Santa Cruz chapel
Santa Cruz Fort is a magnificent stone building that rises atop Mount Aïdour, offering a magnificent view from the west over the city of El Bahia.
A Catholic church bearing the same name is located near the fort. At an altitude of 429 meters, the Chapel of Santa Cruz, managed by the diocese of Oran, was built by the Spaniards who were trying to oppose the Ottomans in the 16th century. Due to its dominant position, they had an ideal position to defend the city.
Today, it is a must-visit location in Oran, perfect for taking souvenir photos and admiring the beauty of the city from above.
November 1st Square
November 1st Square, formerly known as Place d’Armes, is the historic heart of the city of Oran. In its center, there is an obelisk featuring Emir Abdelkader, topped by a sculpture called “La Gloire” by the French sculptor Aimé-Jules Dalou. It is a popular leisure spot, especially for art and history enthusiasts.
Sacred Heart Cathedral
Located in downtown Oran, the Sacred Heart Cathedral was transformed into a communal library after Algeria’s independence. Designed by Albert Ballu, an architect of the French government in Algeria at the time, the cathedral is of Roman-Byzantine architecture and was inaugurated in 1913. The cathedral is now open to visitors every day of the week, and admission is free.
The seafront
The seafront is a pleasant place for a family stroll, accessible from the famous ALN Boulevard which, over two kilometers, runs along the city to the Zabana roundabout passing by the wall of the Bey’s fortress. A panoramic view of the Mediterranean awaits you, ideal for afternoon walks.
Sidi El Houari
The richness of Sidi El Houari, a mythical neighborhood of the city, is expressed particularly through its history and dwellings. The popular heart of the city of Oran houses multiple monuments classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Emirat Square fountain, the Spanish Gate, the Tambour San José, the Château Neuf, and the Pacha Mosque. This ancient neighborhood has the power to transport its visitors through the centuries.
Ibn Badis Promenade
Formerly known as Létang Promenade, created in 1836 by the French general of the same name, it is located between the port and the Bey’s Palace. Spread over 6 hectares, the garden is composed of various plant species, some of which are very rare such as ficus, conifers, aloes, and many palm trees. The promenade has been classified as a historical monument of the city since 1954, also offering a superb view of Mount Murdjadjo, the port of Oran, and the old town.
