Imsak and iftar are the two main pillars of the fasting month. Imsak, meaning “restraint,” marks the beginning of fasting, the moment when Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, and any act that could invalidate the fast. Iftar, meaning “break the fast,” refers to the end of the period of abstinence at sunset.
Note that the schedules for Iftar and Imsak for the wilayas of Algeria are defined by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
