Energy and Mines Minister Mohamed Arkab has reported significant progress in the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project following the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) at the International Conference Center (CIC). According to him, out of the planned 4,000 km, only 1,800 km of technical studies remain to be completed.

The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, spanning 4,000 km from Abuja to the Algerian coast, aims to export Nigerian gas. Currently, nearly 2,200 km have been completed, with only segments in Nigeria (100 km), Niger (1,000 km), and Algeria (700 km) remaining to be completed.

The meeting between Nigerian, Nigerien, and Algerian ministers at the Summit emphasized the urgency of revitalizing the project. This unanimous decision illustrates the commitment of the three countries to collaborate for its completion.

The “Algiers Declaration” from the 7th GECF gas summit represents a major advance in international gas cooperation. It emphasizes the need to increase investments to meet the growing global demand for gas.

Minister Arkab highlights the importance of long-term gas investments to ensure the energy security of countries. He calls for a forward-looking vision in the gas market for at least a decade to guarantee its stability.

Facilitations offered by the Algerian hydrocarbons law

Algeria facilitates energy partnerships through its hydrocarbons legislation. This openness has attracted positive interest from major international companies, particularly for long-term contracts in the gas sector.

Energy relations between Algeria and Europe are strengthening, with discussions underway on financing gas projects. Algeria seeks to convince its European partners of the efficiency of gas for energy security.

Algeria is committed to supporting gas projects in Africa, in line with President Tebboune’s directives. Training programs are planned to support African states in developing their gas industry.

Sonatrach is intensifying its efforts to increase gas production in Algeria. With only 47% of the exploration zone explored, new projects are underway to further exploit the country’s gas resources.

Sonatrach aims to increase its liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, with a capacity of up to 56 billion cubic meters. Last year, Algeria exported 30 billion cubic meters of LNG.

In conclusion, the progress of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project and efforts to strengthen gas cooperation both regionally and internationally demonstrate the willingness of the countries involved to address global energy challenges.
